I've recently found this project and am trying to evaluate it (on paper) for an application I have. Thing is, I'm a little puzzled about the effective Scout-Scout radio range. I note that the 'official' description talks about 10m, but in the forum, there has been comparison with Zigbee, where the range was noted to be approaching 60m or so, with a potential improvement (channel selection) to 90m. I also note that there has been some talk of antenna improvements to try to increase range (or decrease power, depending upon your viewpoint).
My question is: in a non-RF polluted environment, such as a true (actual) green field location, what is considered a useful effective range for these modules. Does anyone have any experience of their deployment in such an environment?
I know that there is no such as a guaranteed range, with many factors that influence it, but I am curious to know how true the 10m range quoted in the FAQ is against real world experience.
Edit: Further digging around on the site led me to mention of a 900MHz long range backpack - any sign of this? I can't find any more info on it other than a single mention on this site and some other mentions in archives of the old forum (I believe).
Thanks in advance
